| Bio: | Age/Birthdate: 365, after being born on 11 July 1643. Physically? He looks about 23. Family: Carlisle's wife is Esme, who he turned in 1921. His "adopted" children include Edward, Rosalie, Emmett (these three he turned himself), Alice, and Jasper. General Personality: Carlisle is intelligent, scholarly, paternal, and, above all, highly compassionate. He believes in peace and the innate goodness of most creatures, especially humans. While he's highly adverse to violence and will try every other alternative to it first, he won't run from anything that poses a threat to those he loves. Carlisle's almost naive optimism and easy trust in others is easily one of his largest flaws. Though he had lived most of his life in solitude, he would do anything to keep his family safe, happy, and with him. This desire to please (perhaps even an obsession to do so) can backfire: he turned Rosalie in a failed effort to make Edward happy, an act didn't at all take into account what Rosalie might have wanted (and indeed, she regrets being turned). He agreed to turn Bella against Edward's wishes because he didn't want to lose Edward should a human Bella die. Background: Carlisle was born in London, England during 1640s to a widowed (in childbirth) Anglican Pastor during a time when Plague was prevalent and religion (and the English government) was in great upheaval. Carlisle's father was zealous in his pursuit of hunting down supernatural creatures, and Carlisle often accompanied his father on these raids. The culmination of these pursuits resulted in the death of several innocent lives. When Carlisle's father became too feeble to continue such arduous activities, Carlisle took his place. However, Carlisle had always been highly intelligent and loath to be so quick in his accusations as his father had been. His patience and cleverness resulted in him stumbling across a real coven of vampires in the sewers, for which his hunting party was quite unprepared. In the ensuing chaos and violence, Carlisle was attacked and bitten, left to bleed in the streets. Innately knowing he wouldn't be welcomed back (and indeed, would probably be killed), Carlisle dragged himself to a nearby potato cellar to undergo the painful transformation into a vampire alone. When he emerged, he was both ravenously hungry and yet appalled by these new monstrous desires for human blood. After trying and failing to kill himself in various ways, and growing increasingly more hungry, Carlisle couldn't control his blood lust any longer when a herd of deer passed by the cave in which he had been hiding. After culling most of the herd, his thirst was sated, and Carlisle then realized he could survive by feeding off the blood of animals rather than humans. Armed with this knowledge, Carlisle set out to create a new life for himself, using the years to pursue his studies in the arts and sciences. He traveled across Europe and Asia often, finally settling on becoming a doctor, a profession he enjoyed immensely for the fact that he could redeem his prior sins by saving lives instead of taking them. In Italy, he discovered the powerful Volturi coven and stayed with them for a time, becoming a particular favorite of Aro, one of the Volturi leaders. During his stay, the Volturi tried to convince him to return to his more "natural" instincts while Carlisle, in vain, attempted to convince them to seek more "vegetarian" options. Both failed in convincing the other, resulting in Carlisle taking his leave in favor of the promising New World across the Atlantic. It would be in America where Carlisle would begin building his own large coven, first with Edward in 1918 during the Chicago Spanish Influenza epidemic, then Esme in 1921 in Wisconsin, with whom he feel in love with and married. In 1933, he turned Rosalie Hale, intending her to be a mate for Edward as Esme was to him. However, neither were interested in the other, and two years later, Rosalie would eventually bring Emmett, her future husband, to him to turn as she feared she would drain him. Eventually, the coven would be joined by Alice and Jasper. The coven spent most of their time in areas that were often overcast, usually Alaska and the pacific northwest. If anyone suspected them, they would move quickly, creating as little waves as possible in their efforts to blend in with human society. When Carlisle moved the family to Forks, Washington, he was able to make a peace pact with the Quileute tribe: his family would be left alone if they didn't bite any humans or trespass on Quileute lands. While it hasn't been easy living in Forks, particularly since Bella Swan has become a fixture in his family's lives, Carlisle continues to struggle to maintain that balance with keeping his family under the radar from humans, the Volturi, and werewolves--and lately, it's become increasingly harder to do so. Appearance: Carlisle is 6'2", blonde, and has a slender but muscular build. He's endowed with the pale supernatural beauty gifted to all vampires to lure in their prey. Rather unlike most vampires, however, are his commonly amber-colored eyes, which have a peculiar tendency to darken every few weeks. The nurses, who have had a vested interest in Carlisle since his arrival at Forks, often excuse this odd occurrence as yet another time when the poor doctor has over-worked himself to exhaustion. | |||||||||
